The Mad Hatter golf tournament was inaugurated 22 years ago as a major fund raiser for the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club.

The concept was based on the annual Barney Banarto golf tournament, which is held in Kimberley, South Africa and was the brain child of Dave Wilson, ably supported by his loyal Kimberley friends. They have participated annually and Dave will again be down here.

Loosely themed around the Mad Hatter tea party, living next door to Alice;the search for Alice! Make sense.

The tournament consists of 6 days, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday being  relatively relaxing Better Ball Stableford competitions. The Thursday, Friday and Saturday are Individual Stableford competitions, each being very challenging. For those that play these 3 days, there is an overall prize, the Order of Merit for the individual who accumulates the most points.

This year the tournament takes place from the 24th to the 29thof April and has already attracted a large number of entries, including the regulars from Kimberley, Johannesburg, Springs, the Reef and Durban and Cape Town.

Although this is a fund raiser for our Royal Club, the tournament is a highlight of activity that benefits the town of Port Alfred, which is situated on the Kowie River between Port Elizabeth and East London in the Eastern Cape, not too far from the City of Churches, Grahamstown.

About 400 people arrive to play golf and many many more come to this golfing event, all requiring accommodation, entertainment and sustinance.

There are prize givings every evening at the Club, with evening musical entertainers performing, to which all are welcome.

The tournament is funded from the proceeds of the sale of raffle tickets, where over 20 valuable prizes are up for grabs, together with the advertising revenue from sale of space forplaying tees, greens, flag poles and golf holes. These contribute a lot, but there are also very generous sponsors, one for each day, whose contributions balance the budget, which also sees to the provision of donations, which in the past have been those catering for children, other benevolent societies, the SPCA and Hospice. As a Club, Royal Port Alfred has an obligation to it’s  community and our Social Responsibility Statement, which can be found on our website, contains in short, that, “We are here to provide affordable sporting facilities to our citizens and others and to preserve the unique  environmental beauty that we and the community has inherited, hopefully for years to come.”

We feel that this is accomplished and look forward to all the visiting golfers and guests.
